Torrens aiming for big league jump to Padres

PEORIA, Ariz. -- If the Padres' Opening Day roster plays out like it's penciled out to, the club could be carrying at least three players ages 22 or under who have never played above Class A ball.

Hard-throwing right-hander Miguel Diaz (22), infielder Allen Cordoba (21), and catcher Luis Torrens (20) are all trying to make a rare jump from the low-level Minors to the big leagues as Rule 5 Draft picks, and Torrens' attempt to win a backup catching job is a lot like drinking from the fire hydrant for the Venezuelan.
