POWAY — Local baseball legend Tony Gwynn loved Poway, his wife Alicia said Monday morning during a groundbreaking ceremony for a memorial that shows just how much the community loved him back.
“Thank you for allowing him to be a normal person,” she said to a crowd of several hundred people gathered in front of the Lake Poway baseball diamond where the Tony Gwynn memorial will be erected this winter.
“He said ‘I love Poway because it allows me to be a family man and they allow me to be just Tony,’” Gwynn’s widow said.
