Padres aiming for impact with slew of high picks

History books will show Logan White had the draft pegged absolutely, 100 percent correct when his staff used the seventh overall pick in 2006 on Clayton Kershaw, a high school left-hander out of University Park, Texas. The Dodgers’ former scouting director knows the truth.

With the big league team spending much of the 2016 to date in the NL West cellar, a great deal of the focus this year is on the amateur draft, where the Padres own six of the top 85 picks. Of course, as appetizing as that is for a team in need of homegrown talent, the beleaguered Padres have picked early and often before without producing a whole lot of major leaguers.
