As for Cahill, he was part of Chicago's World Series championship team last season and has pitched well enough this spring to earn a spot on San Diego's roster. However, it's unclear if he will be in the rotation behind Jhoulys Chacin, Clayton Richard and Jered Weaver or in the bullpen. Cahill is competing with Luis Perdomo and Jarred Cosart for one of the two remaining spots in the rotation.
The veteran right-handed pitcher gave up a hit to Cubs center fielder Jon Jay in the bottom of the first and did not give up another hit until an RBI single by Jeimer Candelario in the bottom of the third to cut San Diego's lead to 4-1.
