In 2013, Rutgers signed 21 players to its recruiting class. Nine of those players are no longer on the roster. In 2014, Rutgers signed 26 players and 11 are no longer on the banks. That's 42.6 percent of the recruits combined over two recruiting classes that are no longer in the program. Retention (or the opposite of attrition) is a key reason why elite Big Ten programs such as Michigan State, Wisconsin and Iowa win. "(Michigan State) has done a great job developing the talent and keeping it in the program,'' says Allen Trieu, the lead Midwest football recruiting analyst for Scout.
