Rutgers coach Chris Ash: quarterback competition 'will be won on the field'

The odds that Zach Allen will be Rutgers' starting quarterback to start the 2017 season are slim. After all, the rising fifth-year senior had opportunities to earn the starting job last year after arriving as a grad transfer from TCU and couldn't beat out either Chris Laviano (who started the first seven games) or Gio Rescigno (who started the last five games).

But as Rutgers begins its seemingly annual open quarterback competition this summer, Allen adds a valuable ingredient to the QB room, according to Scarlet Knights coach Chris Ash.
