Meredith Civico didn't have to search much to understand what had to change when she became Rutgers’ field hockey coach seven years ago.

She lived it.

Civico (then Long) was a high school All-American and two-time All-State field hockey player at Ocean City High, helping the Red Raiders win three state championships. Her collegiate career took her north, first to Boston University, and then south, winning a national title at Maryland as a transfer. But not to New Brunswick, and for good reason.

“You know what? They didn’t recruit me,” Civico said, agreeing with a reporter the notion seems a little “insane.
