K.J. Gray emerges as Rutgers' 3rd safety: 'I'm looking to be the ballhawk of the team'

PISCATAWAY -- K.J. Gray's role in the Rutgers secondary isn't quite so black and white.

Sometimes he will play free safety. Sometimes he will play strong safety. He might start or come off the bench, but either way he will see plenty of snaps.

"K.J. will be heavily involved right from the get-go," co-defensive coordinator Bill Busch said.

After displaying a nose for the ball as a true freshman in 2016, Gray's offseason development allows Rutgers to count him as essentially a third starting safety alongside returning redshirt juniors Saquan Hampton (free) and Kiy Hester (strong).
