Providence College is again going to honor one of its unsung heroes.

His name is Ken Walker, and his name is one we should all know.

I first met him back in the early 1960s, and he was a referee in the Interscholastic League, one of the first African-Americans to referee high school basketball games, if not the first. He was certainly one of the pioneers.

What I also knew back then was that he wasn’t going to take any nonsense from me, giving me a look that could have cut glass after I questioned one of his calls.
