Earlier this year, the World Series of Poker did just that when they announced their plans for the Colossus – a $565 bracelet event with the goal of shattering previous attendance records with over 20,000 entrants.

Lance Garcia didn’t expect to beat a field of 22,274 players – no rational poker pro would - but after he bagged up a sizable chip stack on his third entry in the event, the idea of a deep run became real to him when he changed his mind set to that he was playing a satellite to a 5,000-player tournament.
