Steelers claim QB Zach Mettenberger off waivers

The Steelers have claimed former Tennessee Titans and San Diego Chargers quarterback Zach Mettenberger off waivers and plan to use him as their No. 3 quarterback, a team source told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Mettenberger, 25, was released by the Chargers Tuesday after spending the previous two seasons with the Titans. A sixth-round draft choice in 2014 out of LSU, Mettenberger started 10 games in two seasons with the Titans, throwing 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

His arrival likely means the end for veteran Bruce Gradkowski, who was placed on injured reserve after sustaining a severe hamstring injury in the first preseason game.
