Ron Cook: Pirates' decision to avoid major moves is not a white flag

Baseball’s trade deadline came and went Monday without Neal Huntington making a major move unless you count getting a couple of prospects for Tony Watson and adding ancient reliever Joaquin Benoit as major moves, which I don’t. Some look at Huntington’s inactivity as giving up on the season, but I don’t see it that way. It made sense for the short term.

There wasn’t a player Huntington could have added who would have made these Pirates, decidedly mediocre at 51-54, good enough to catch the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central Division. It also made sense for the long term.
