The Pirates placed third baseman David Freese on the 10-day disabled list (retroactive to Wednesday) with a right hamstring strain and selected the contract of outfielder Danny Ortiz from Triple-A Indianapolis, the club announced Saturday.
Freese tweaked his hamstring running the bases in Monday's game vs. the Cubs, and he has been absent from Pittsburgh's lineup since. The 34-year-old infielder hit in the cage, took batting practice and went through some fielding drills before Friday's contest against the Marlins, but he is not yet ready to return.
