Pirates lose to Cardinals, 6-4, on Carpenter's homer

ST. LOUIS — Matt Carpenter’s game-winning home run in the bottom of the ninth gave the St. Louis Cardinals a 6-4 victory against the Pirates at Busch Stadium Saturday.

A.J. Schugel gave up an infield single to Aledmys Diaz before Carpenter hit a 1-2 changeup into the Cardinals’ bullpen.

Randal Grichuk broke a 3-3 tie in the eighth. His single against Jared Hughes brought home Stephen Piscotty, who had doubled. In four outings since returning from the disabled list, Hughes has allowed five hits, five walks and three runs (two earned) in 3u2154 innings.

David Freese, returning to Busch Stadium for the first time since the Cardinals traded him in 2013, pinch-hit in the ninth and reached on an error.
