The Pittsburgh Pirates have activated right-handed pitcher Jared Hughes from the disabled list, and have optioned Rob Scahill to Indianapolis.
Hughes didn't have a good rehab with Indianapolis, giving up five runs in six innings of work, with all of his runs coming in two separate two inning outings his last two appearances. The runs all came in the first innings of those outings, so it wasn't a case where he was fine for one inning and then fell apart in an extended appearance.
The Pirates have struggled with their middle relievers, and Hughes could be a big boost to them if they get the version from the last few years, who could be called upon for a quick ground ball in a double play situation.
