Paul Zeise: The Pirates should have multiple closers

The idea of “bullpenning” may never actually catch on in Major League Baseball, but if ever there was a team that could use some of those principles, it is the Pirates.

The bullpen appears to be the Pirates’ strength this year. It is deep with a good mix of righties and lefties, including a couple guys who can throw really hard.

While there could be three closer candidates — Tony Watson, Felipe Rivero and Daniel Hudson — the Pirates seem to be set on using Watson in that role.

That’s a mistake. Not because Watson isn’t capable of doing a good job as a closer but because the Pirates shouldn’t limit Watson to save situations.
