According to Peter Gammons, Rick Sofield, the third base coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates, will interview for open manager position with the San Diego Padres. The Padres fired manager Bud Black during the season and named Pat Murphy as the interim manager. Murphy was let go right after the season ended. San Diego finished a disappointing 74-88, despite many predicting they could win the NL West after a total overhaul to their roster this off-season.
Sofield moved to third base coaching this season, after spending two years as the first base coach for the Pirates. He also served as the base running and outfield coach this year.
