Sports Authority awarded coveted federal grant for former Civic Arena site

Local officials have secured a coveted federal grant for the redevelopment of the former Civic Arena site.

U.S. Department of Transportation officials are expected to announce Friday that it is awarding a Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery, or TIGER, grant to help fund construction of a deck over Crosstown Boulevard as part of the arena project.

The grant, to be awarded to the Pittsburgh-Allegheny County Sports & Exhibition Authority, is expected to total $19 million, enough to get the project moving and the amount local leaders had sought.

U.S. Rep. Mike Doyle, D-Forest Hills, said he has received unofficial confirmation that Pittsburgh has been selected to receive the grant.
