Penguins notebook: Penguins send Maatta to minor league team in salary-cap move

Olli Maatta had a solid preseason. In four games, he had two points.

He appears fully poised to rebound from a shoulder injury that kept him out most of the 2014-15 season.

But he’s going to start the 2015-16 campaign in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Before the NHL’s 5 p.m.Tuesday deadline for teams to become compliant with the salary cap, the Penguins assigned Maatta, one of their top defensemen, to their American Hockey League affiliate and recalled center Oskar Sundqvist. The move is designed to benefit the team’s salary cap and is not a reflection on Maatta’s performance in any way.
