Let me be clear in saying that this team is as good as we’ve seen in Pittsburgh since 2009. At least on paper. However, the Pens could really use another top-4 caliber defenseman in order to create some competition among that group and add depth for injuries.
Those veteran contracts are the reason they aren’t able to sign someone like Cody Franson. They’re the reason that the Pittsburgh Penguins are pressed against the cap ceiling with little wiggle room to add necessary pieces.
