Bickley: Suns broadcaster Al McCoy finally gets his ring

Al McCoy is the grandfather of Arizona sports. Steady, kind and dependable. A voice that’s been around forever.

He is among the last of a great generation, when broadcasters were honorary members of your family.

“When I was growing up, that was my goal,” McCoy said. “You were the voice of the Suns.”

Today, there are so many voices and so many places to consume sports. A hometown play-by-play announcer will never again reach the ears of a captive audience. Not the way McCoy and his colleagues did during the golden age of broadcasting.

McCoy is not iconic, not like Vin Scully, Howard Cosell, John Madden or Harry Caray.
