Phillies’ top pitching prospects Abel, Painter dazzle in doubleheader

Phillies’ top prospects Mick Abel and Andrew Painter both took the mound for High-A Jersey Shore on Saturday, combining for two dominant scoreless starts as the BlueClaws swept Hudson Valley in a doubleheader at ShoreTown Ballpark.

Abel, a first-round draft pick in 2020, tossed six shutout innings in Game 1 to lead Jersey Shore to an 8-2 win. He struck out eight batters while scattering three hits and three walks.

With Abel putting up a tough act to follow, Painter managed to then outperform his teammate in the second game. The 2021 first rounder pitched a seven-inning, complete-game shutout as the BlueClaws secured a 2-0 victory.
