Why NFL and college football should ditch regular-season overtime and revert to ties

I like ties. I've always have liked them. I know that probably places me in the minority these days. That's a place I'm happy to be.

The primary reason I like ties is that they expose the truth after 60 minutes. We are not legislating an outcome. We are allowing the competitors to be what they are.

And, in the sport of American football, if they play a regulation game and end with a knotted score after an hour of game clock has expired, there is very often a good reason. Usually it's because neither team is good enough to beat the other.
