Audit to target nixed grant plan for former Sandusky charity

A $3 million grant once earmarked for Jerry Sandusky’s former charity in State College will undergo a state audit this year, Pennsylvania Auditor General Eugene DePasquale said Monday.

Sandusky, 72, founded the now-defunct Second Mile group in 1977, 35 years before his June 2012 conviction on 45 counts of child sexual abuse. In summer 2011, then-Gov. Tom Corbett approved the grant application for the nonprofit, which worked with troubled youth.

The state never disbursed the money after Sandusky’s arrest in November 2011, but Mr. DePasquale said the handling of the application deserves a close review. He listed it among at least 10 projects under the state Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program that his office will audit this fall, checking for undue political influence.
