STANFORD, Calif. -- Christian McCaffrey, Michael Rector, Bryce Love, and Isaiah Brandt-Sims are embroiled in a never-ending argument. Each of those Stanford players strongly believes that he's the fastest on the Cardinal team, so demand for a proper side-by-side footrace is growing -- but the coach isn't having it.
"That's not happening anytime soon," David Shaw laughed. "Regardless of who won the race, they'd still argue about it anyway."
It's not the type of locker room drama that Shaw wants to shut down, either. In fact, a debate among speedsters is precisely what this Stanford program -- built on trench-oriented slogans like "Character and Cruelty" and "Intellectual Brutality" -- has needed to complete a well-rounded product.
