Senators GM works to secure free agents ahead of market opening

CHICAGO - The goal is to keep the Ottawa Senators together.

Still, there are going to be changes and there’s no avoiding it.

There was no rest for Senators general manager Pierre Dorion as the NHL draft wrapped up Saturday afternoon at the United Center, his first order of business was to get on the phone to the club’s unrestricted free agents to see if he can keep them from heading to the lucrative market on July 1.

While free agency doesn’t officially open until noon on Canada’s 150th birthday, the party already started Sunday when the league’s 31 teams were allowed to reach out to UFA’s even though no deals can be officially done until the market is open.
