Assisting others comes natural to Porter

News of Scott Skiles breaking his 12-year-old NBA record of 29 assists in a game didn't catch up with a certain Chicago elementary school teacher for a while.

"I think I heard about it a week or so later," Kevin Porter said.

Playing for the New Jersey Nets, Porter — a 5-foot-11 point guard — set the record in 1978 against the Houston Rockets. He surpassed the single-game assists total of 28 shared by Bob Cousy and Guy Rodgers.

Skiles recorded 30 assists against the run-and-gun Denver Nuggets in 1990 as a point guard for the Magic, whom he now coaches.
