Oregon State football to wear 'Battleship gray base' helmet against Washington State

Oregon State revealed a new helmet Friday, one day away from the Beavers' homecoming matchup with Washington State at Reser Stadium.

The "Battleship gray base" helmet features a grey Beaver logo with orange eyes over a grey helmet with a black facemask. The look is meant to commemorate the school's 1942 Rose Bowl team, which beat Duke 20-16 in the game. The helmet will have the year "1942" on the front and "MEN OF ROSES" on the back.

The Beavers played the game in Durham, North Carolina after taking a cross-country train trip. The Rose Bowl took place less than a month after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and Duke volunteered to host the contest rather than face the possibility it would be cancelled in Pasadena, California for fear of future attacks on the West Coast.
