CARY, N.C. – Oregon State left-handed pitcher Cooper Hjerpe and outfielder Jacob Melton have been named semifinalists for the 2022 Golden Spikes Award, USA Baseball announced Tuesday.
Hjerpe and Melton help comprise the list of 31, and Oregon State joins LSU, Cal Poly, Tennessee and Virginia Tech as the only teams with two semifinalists. The Golden Spikes Award is given annually to the nation's top amateur player.
Hjerpe is 9-2 this season and the Capay, Calif., native ranks fourth in the nation with 135 strikeouts, just four shy of the nation's lead.
