Ragan Smith out of gymnastics worlds with injury

U.S. champion Ragan Smith suffered an ankle injury and withdrew minutes before the world gymnastics championships all-around final in Montreal on Friday night.

Smith left the 1976 Olympic Stadium competition floor on crutches.

Both of the pre-event favorites suffered leg injuries that wiped them out of worlds.

Romanian Larisa Iordache, a two-time world all-around medalist, tore an Achilles warming up for floor exercise before qualification on Wednesday.

Japan’s Mai Murakami had the highest qualifying score. Morgan Hurd is the lone American in the Friday’s final.
