Storming the basketball court and football field might be part of the college experience, but it also has its dangers

As the final seconds ticked down in overtime of the 2013 Bedlam basketball game in Stillwater, Landon Stallings knew had had to act quick.

Stallings, wearing the heavy and vision-limiting costume of Pistol Pete, needed to shed the firearms that help give the Cowboys’ mascot the moniker.

“We know we’re about to rush the court,” Stallings said. “It’s evident. So I go to my handler and we have kind of a little communication system where he knows what I need even though I can’t say it, and I point at my guns and he says, ‘Oh yeah,’ and takes them from me because I know I’m about to get mauled.
