Greg Windham came off the bench to quarterback Ohio to a near big-time upset, but a late interception sealed Western Michigan’s 29-23 victory in the MAC Championship game in Detroit Friday night.
After losing his starting job midseason to redshirt freshman quarterback Quinton Maxwell, Windham relieved an ineffective Maxwell with the Broncos leading 9-0 halfway through the first quarter. Maxwell failed to complete a pass and lost a fumble before being benched.
Windham’s insertion at quarterback energized the Bobcats offense for the rest of the game. He completed 14 of 30 passes for 214 yards and three touchdowns, including a 67-yard strike on his first snap to Papi White.
