A’s hope to play Cactus League opener, plan for possible rainout

MESA, Ariz. — The A’s are doing everything they can to make sure Thursday’s spring opener gets played.

Though the forecast called for heavy rainfall throughout the day, the A’s are continued to prepare the field for a game against the Mariners at Hohokam Stadium after the rain stopped about two hours before the scheduled start time of 12:05 p.m. PT.

Paul Blackburn and Frankie Montas were the two starters set to pitch in Thursday’s opener. Both pitchers would throw a simulated game over at the club’s minor league facility down the road at Fitch Park should the game be rained out.
