A’s fifth-starter battle gets underway in loss to Cubs

MESA, Ariz. -The race for the first spot in the A’s rotation began in earnest Saturday, with three of the contenders in action.

Jesse Hahn started for Oakland, and if he hadn’t lunged for a grounder to his right in the second inning, his final line probably would look a lot neater.

With men at second and third, Hahn tapped a bouncer off the bat of Matt Szczur just out of the reach of shortstop Marcus Semien, who wouldn’t reverse direction quick enough. Both runners came in, Szczur was safe at first, and he came in double by Ian Happ.
