A's Gray won't pitch in WBC due to insurance company issue

Sonny Gray won't pitch in the World Baseball Classic after all.

The A's pitcher was slated to pitch for Team USA if the squad reached the second round of the WBC.

But on Sunday, the A's announced that Gray won't be allowed to participate after an insurance carrier decided not to cover Gray.

Because Gray was on the disabled list at the end of August and spent more than 60 days on the DL in 2016, the carrier had the right to decline coverage.

According to the A's, MLB requested a waiver to allow Gray to pitch, but it was not their call.
