CHICAGO -- Northwestern took the lead over Illinois on a Warren Long touchdown run with 1:21 left in the first quarter.
Before long punched it in from three yards out, the Wildcats' drive was extended by a personal foul penalty on a Northwestern punt. An Illinois player "leaped over the punt shield," earning a 15-yard penalty and an automatic first down.
Northwestern scored earlier in the game on a 19-yard pass from Clayton Thorson to Dan Vitale.
