University of Northern Iowa senior catcher Anna Varriano has been named to the 2017 Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete first team.
Varriano (Overland Park, Kansas/Blue Valley HS) carries a 3.57 cumulative grade point average with a major in communication disorders. Varriano earned MVC Defensive Player of the Year honors and was a second-team all-MVC selection. Varriano was also a three-time honoree on the MVC all-defensive squad (2015, 2016, 2017). Varriano batted .308 as a senior with 40 hits, eight home runs and 29 RBI. Varriano threw out 16 would-be base stealers in 2017.
