A softly spoken Tift Merritt has plans for the evening and it doesn't involve a gig. Instead it begins with a cocktail at a bar in North Carolina, her home state where she is on holiday. Her choice? A martini. "Gin, dirty. Very dirty." But just the one. "I've discovered that I can only do one, which is very good," she says. "I call two a nighty night."
