Atlanta Falcons reward another homegrown player, extending CB Robert Alford's contract

After signing their general manager, Thomas Dmitroff, and right tackle Ryan Schraeder to in-season extensions, the Falcons have locked up another key cog. This time, they've retained a defensive centerpiece in cornerback Robert Alford.

The Falcons officially announced a four-year extension for Alford, reportedly worth $38 million with $21 million guaranteed, per ESPN's Adam Schefter and NFL Network.

Alford, the club's 2013 second-round pick, has thrived in the absence of Desmond Trufant, who was placed on injured reserve on Nov. 29 with a torn pectoral. The Southeastern Louisiana product has started all 12 games this season and produced 47 tackles, 12 passes defensed and two interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown.
