The Yankees reached an agreement with free-agent outfielder Matt Holliday for a one-year, $13 million contract on Sunday, a team employee with knowledge of personnel matters said.
Holliday is expected to serve primarily as the designated hitter for the Yankees, who have a glut of outfielders. Holliday, who will turn 37 next month, was a formidable slugger in his prime, but his production declined amid injuries over his last two years with St. Louis. The agreement is pending a physical, the team employee said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the deal was not final.
