September 12, 1996: Yankees complete sweep of Tigers

The Yankees handed the lowly Tigers their sixth straight loss this afternoon, as they completed the sweep by winning 12-3.

David Cone turned in his third straight solid start since coming back from surgery. He tossed seven innings while striking eight and giving up three runs.

The Yankees offense exploded for five runs off Tiger starter Justin Thompson, one off reliever A.J. Sager, and six off Jose Lima. Leading the way was Bernie Williams, who knocked in a career-high eight RBI. Two of them came when he smacked a homer off Thompson in the third, and four more came when he hit a grand slam with two out in the ninth.
