Bryan Mitchell’s letdown likely clarifies Yankees’ rotation

TAMPA — Bryan Mitchell remains in good position to make the Yankees’ 25-man roster for Opening Day, but it appears the right-hander will be in the bullpen instead of the starting rotation.

Since the Yankees don’t need a fifth starter until April 16, Joe Girardi’s rotation will require only four starters, and it appears Luis Severino’s stellar outing against the Phillies on Friday, when he hurled three scoreless and hitless innings and fanned five, might have been enough to earn him the fourth slot.

Mitchell certainly didn’t enhance his chances Sunday, when he gave up three runs, six hits and two walks in three innings against the Rays in a 7-4 Yankees win at GMS Field.
