Trusty bullpen blows Whitley’s gem as Yanks fall to Jays

TORONTO — Asked to clean up the mess left by Chris Martin in the eighth inning, Dellin Betances watched a bloop double ruin the pitching gem delivered by Chase Whitley.

With runners on first and second, one out and the Yankees leading by the game’s only run, Betances gave up a soft double to Edwin Encarnacion that tied the score and hung a no-decision on Whitley.

When two runs scored on Russell Martin’s infield single that led to a throwing error by Chase Headley the Blue Jays were on their way to a 3-1 victory Monday night that was witnessed by an announced Rogers Centre crowd of 19,217.
