2017 U-20 World Cup round-up, Group D, round 1: Uruguay serves notice, Japan holds its nerve

Group D looks like the 2017 U-20 World Cup's true Group of Death, with the Asia and South American qualifying champions joined by the runner-up from the UEFA qualifiers and AFCON U-20 surprise package South Africa. The teams that get out of this group will be confident they have already been well tested.

South Africa was in front after seven minutes, triggering memories of the scoring cascade that saw the team through to the semifinals of the 2017 AFCON U-20 tournament.

But Japan was not unduly shaken by conceding an early goal.
