Why must the Mets torture us like this?

The final pitch weaved around Matt Holliday’s bat at 10:37 p.m., ending a long and torturous and ultimately full day for the Mets and for Mets fans — 6 hours, 27 minutes of high-octane, high-stakes baseball that resulted in — what else? — a push for the home team.

One loss that will surely sting in October if the Mets fall a furlong or two shy of the postseason; one win that will surely be necessary if they’re to build a big enough pile of victories to eke into October. That’s the way it is, and that’s the way it’s going to be, so it’s best to stockpile the Maalox and the Pepto-Bismol, too.
