After dropping the first game of a rare single-admission doubleheader Tuesday at Citi Field against the St. Louis Cardinals, a team the Mets are expected to fight for a playoff spot, Manager Terry Collins urgently declared that his club needed to start producing more runs and stringing wins together.
Collins’s message was not directed at any of his players in particular. But the Mets forced a split by winning the second game, 3-1, behind an unlikely contributor — Alejandro De Aza.
