How weather could take away rotation shot from Mets call-up

PITTSBURGH — Tyler Pill is the front-runner for the upcoming vacancy in the Mets’ rotation, but manager Terry Collins stopped short Saturday of naming the rookie to that spot.

The Mets have an opening Tuesday, following the demotion of Rafael Montero, who struggled through three innings in a spot start against the Padres on Thursday.

Collins also is considering reliever Josh Smoker for the start.

“Probably Pill right now over Smoker,” Collins said before the Mets faced the Pirates at PNC Park. “But that can change [Sunday].”

Among the considerations is Sunday night’s weather forecast, which calls for storms.
