Final Score: Mets 14, Padres 2— Gonzo goes gonzo

The Mets defeated the Padres 14-2 this afternoon in San Diego, on the back of a good performance by Zack Wheeler. Wheeler, who went five innings, struck out nine, walked two, and gave up two hits. Paul Sewald relieved him, going two innings and striking out three.

The Mets scored in each of the three innings, piling on Padres’ starter Bryan Mitchell, knocking him from the game with two outs in the fifth. After three scoreless innings, the Mets’ offense exploded, scoring five runs in the seventh and five in the eighth.
