Michael Conforto optioned to Triple-A to make room for Yoenis Cespedes

The Mets had to open a roster spot to make room for their big acquisition.

Mets outfielder Michael Conforto has been optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas to free up a roster spot for Yoenis Cespedes, who was acquired in a last-minute trade yesterday from the Detroit Tigers.

Conforto, who was promoted from Double-A Binghamton on July 24, hit .211/.348/.316 in 23 plate appearances with the big league club. It's a small sample size, but Conforto hadn't yet found the groove that had served him so well in the minor leagues; he was hitting .
