Errors cost Mets in rubber match vs. Yankees

For one night they looked like the same old Mets.

The chance to win the series and make a statement about city supremacy were lost in a hail of fielding errors and baserunning blunders as the Mets fell to the Yankees, 6-4.

For most of the season, the Mets have been fundamentally sound. On Sunday they were fundamentally awful.

Third baseman Eric Campbell, shortstop Wilmer Flores and left fielder Michael Cuddyer all made throwing errors and second baseman Daniel Murphy booted a double-play ground ball in the field. Cuddyer’s miscue led to a run in the Yankees’ four-run second inning and the combination of Murphy’s and Flores’ in the sixth led to another run.
